Aina Melis

Turku
Aina Melis (Mallorca, Spain) is a visual artist based in Turku, Finland. She studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, where she developed her interest in the intersections between drawing, printmaking, and geometric abstraction. Her practice has long revolved around the graphite pencil, a tool she uses to build layered textures and tonal variations through soft, repetitive strokes. These mark-making processes often result in gradients and vibrating surfaces, evoking the sensation of magnetic fields or elastic visual rhythms. Lines and stripes emerge and dissolve into the paper, producing a subtle play between presence and absence. In recent years, her exploration has expanded into linocut printing and mixed media, allowing her to translate her visual language into new processes. For Aina, the act of making is deeply tied to process itself , whether in drawing or printmaking, repetition and rhythm are not just methods but ways of creating balance and anchoring perception. Her compositions are built from elemental forms :arcs, semicircles, vertical bands , and from a restrained palette that often takes on primary colors. Within these simple structures, she investigates symmetry and asymmetry, tension and release, stability and movement. The influence of minimalism, Suprematism, and the Bauhaus is present throughout her work, while her own process-driven approach imbues the pieces with warmth, tactility, and meditative focus.
